Garden of the Gods & Manitou Springs

Garden of the Gods

Manitou Springs

Native American Postcards from Manitou Springs

BRING: Pack your vintage Levi's cut-offs, Bally waffle stompers and a copy of Centennial by James A. Michener, and set out to El Paso County, Colorado, to the sounds of Yonder Mountain String Band.

STAY: For the literary romantics, book the Charles Dickens suite at The Cliff House at Pike's Peak, a charming and historic alpine lodge nestled in the foothills that Travel + Leisure just named on of the top 100 hotels in the world. There's also the Clark Gable Suite or the Teddy Roosevelt Suite!

DO: Rise with the sun and hike around Garden of the God's and you'll see why it got it's name. Make sure to see the Kissing Camels and the Balancing Rock. Take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the world's highest cog railroad, to the top of snowy Pikes Peak. Visit the Nikola Tesla Museum of Science and Industry.

SHOP: Take in the emerging art scene and invest in Navajo yei blankets, horse hair pottery, moccasins, and turquoise jewelry. I scored some beautiful Native America postcards and a foxtail a la Louis Vuitton.

DRINK: Drink the healing, natural mineral water of Mantiou springs from 10 spigots around town. Go for organic Yerba Mate at Mate Factor. Create your own custom wine at D'vine Wine, a boutique winery located in the historic Spa Building. Or cool off with a margarita at The Loop or a Fat Tire at Adam's Mountain Cafe on the garden patio overlooking the creek.

DINE: Lunch by the window seat at The Craftwood Inn like Cary Grant and Bing Crosby. After a day of trekking in the mountains, cozy up to some hearty Swiss food in the wine cellar at The Mona Lisa Fondue Restaurant.

Shave Ice

Photo: NYT

Popular the world over in many incarnations, shave ice is poised to finally claim its rightful place in the upper echelons of refreshing summer treats. Gourmands are taking to to streets and bringing this once humble, albeit DayGlo, staple of the pushcart vendor to the hippest establishments. Lindsay Laricks of Kansas City's delightful Fresher than Fresh, sells her all-natural snow cones out of a 1957 Shasta trailer at local markets and art openings.

With so many different flavor combos waiting to be tried and tested, it looks like I'll be making these all summer! I'm envisioning lavender-lemon-lime-sea salt, blackberry-basil-cracked pepper, vanilla bean-ginger-almond...

Do you have any recipe ideas?

Festival Style

Would that I were Charlotte Gainsbourg, expertly navigating the festival circuit with boxes of Balenciaga. Alas, Mr. Ghesquière cannot play fairy godmother to us all! Instead, we mere mortals must maneuver the mud and music on our own.

Inspired by the V Magazine spread "Kate Moss and the Gypsies,"

Here's the Coulter Curated Guide to Festival Style:

  1. See by Chloé Ruffle Eyelet Peasant Blouse
  2. Ann Demeulemeester Leather Waste Coat
  3. Earthlover Hemp Rucksack
  4. Kenneth Cole Fedora
  5. Top Shop Hot Pants
  6. Jeffrey Campbell Combat Boots
  7. Ann Demeulemeester Feather Necklace
  8. Oliver Peoples for Balmain Sunglasses
P.S. Download the free 'NPR Music At Bonnaroo' sampler!

Love from Bonnaroo: Mumford and Sons,
Dave Rawlings Machine, Old Crow Medicine Show, John Prine, and Kris Kristofferson! This music fills my soul!

For Him:
  • Mulberry Hand Clipper
  • The Art of Shaving Travel Kit

  • Canon Digital SLR
  • Hermes Portfolio
  • Tom Ford Sunglasses
  • Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck
  • iPhone
  • Bose Noise Canceling Headphones

For Her:

  • Louis Vuitton SC Bag
  • Louis Vuitton iPad Case

  • Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerit Yourcenar

Gone are the days of café society, when bright young things stole away to Europe with monogrammed steamer trunks aboard transatlantic ocean liners. But that doesn't mean the modern jet set can't still travel in style. Think the jungle patterned statement luggage designed by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton in The Darjeeling Limited.

Whether you're heading to Capri for the Sun, Gstaad for the snow, or Paris for the shows, you will want to travel with ease and effortless style. I love the elegance of a classic hard-back suitcase, but nothing beats the laid back cool of a supple leather duffel.
